Allied Drywall Material Supply began in 1950, as Gross Lathing & Plastering Contractors Company owned by Ronald Gross.
During the mid-50's, with new technology in the construction industry, the advent of a new wall covering product was developed, namely "gypsum wallboard". With the overlap between plastering and drywall, Better Service Drywall Company came into being in 1958.
As 1960 approached, the lumber yards were not able to supply the demand for the new gypsum wallboard product for this new segment of the construction industry and Allied Drywall Materials Supply came into existence in order to better serve the requirements of the growing drywall industry. In 1962, a drywall material yard was established with two employees and one flatbed truck in its present location in Lombard, Illinois, next to the Great Western Railroad, with a spur track leading into the new material yard. Servicing, Better Service Drywall Company and other drywall contractors increased greatly and Allied Drywall Materials & Management Company was incorporated September 27, 1963. Many advancements were made during the 1960's. The first boom truck appeared from Prentice, Wisconsin replacing hand unloading from flatbed trucks. Along with the growth in the new segment of the industry, the growth of Allied Drywall Materials steadily improved. On April 1, 1972, Allied Drywall Materials Supply Company was sold by Ronald Gross, who retired, to his brother, Walter Gross. During the 1970's, the company built additional storage buildings and in 1976, a new general office and warehouse building on its site in Lombard, Illinois. In 1983, the company opened its material storage facility in Steger, Illinois, to service northeast Indiana and southern greater Chicagoland to Kankakee, Illinois.
In 1985 the company purchased the adjacent Edward Hines Lumber yard to expand its material storage facilities. The second generation of the Walter Gross Family entered into the companies operation, namely daughters Diane and Dona, and his third son Jim. Jim became full-time on January 1, 1982.
The 1990's saw further expansion when a new entirely enclosed modern warehouse and office facility was built in 1998 in Hazel Crest, Illinois to replace the outgrown Steger operation. At the present time, Allied Drywall Materials is one of the largest drywall and supply companies for the commercial, industrial and residential market in the greater Chicagoland, northwest Indiana and southeast Wisconsin area.
